The new capsule collection features Hillier Bartley’s skinny sans serif logo and photographs by Bartley’s husband, David Sims, inspired by the sexually charged work of artist Sarah Lucas. “What appeals is the idea of adding an extra layer, putting these images that play with sexual identity on causal, everyday pieces—the clash of cultures,” says Bartley, adding, “I love the idea of these provocative images being on baggy unisex sweatshirts and T-shirts. The clash feels very us and weirdly harmonious.”
As we all know, though, the only constant is change, in fashion most of all, and starting tomorrow, the designers will begin selling a lower-priced range of sweatshirts and tees. “As we relaxed into the idea of who the HB woman is and started to become more playful, we realized that luxury encompasses the idea of being able to create any product, whether it feels correct or not,” says Bartley. And anyway, it’s how Bartley herself dresses. “I have a weird, rather OCD tendency toward balancing outfits,” she admits. “If I have a tailored jacket, I have to balance it with a fraying shirt or sweatshirt underneath. If I’m wearing a silk shirt, I need to put something a bit tatty over the top. I can never wear two new things together. I really think it adds another, more relatable level to what we do.”
The project is personal in another way, too: It will only be available on the Hillier Bartley website. “We recently had a sale in our studio, and it gave everyone a real high to see people hanging out and talking about the product,” says Bartley. “In an ideal world, I’d love to work like this, selling through the studio. The next best thing is online, and we felt the sweat capsule seemed a good place to begin. I love the fact that the streetwear brands have that closer connection with their customers and peers.”
