“One of the challenges is that nowadays you can’t do a revival without a star, so we had to consider: Is Beanie enough of a star?” admits the director, Michael Mayer, “We’ll find out, but I think so.” A 21-year-old Barbra Streisand was also a gamble when she first took on the role of the real-life Brice, the irreverent daughter of Jewish immigrants, who, through sheer pluck, vaulted from Lower East Side vaudeville acts to become the star of the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1920s. As a comedic performer unafraid to caricature herself, Brice laid the groundwork for generations of women who did not fit the traditional mold of demure, leggy female performers. The 1964 musical fictionalized Brice’s rise to fame and tempestuous marriage to con man Nicky Arnstein, and made Streisand (appearing in her film debut four years later) an equal icon in the process.
“It was important to us to really find someone who could embody the essence of Fanny Brice,” says Mayer (whose Tony Award–winning Spring Awakening Feldstein and Platt made a pilgrimage to see in ninth grade). “It felt like a good idea to find someone Jewish, about the age of Fanny at the height of her fame, someone funny, dear, charming, who could sing, dance, act, and who is clearly ‘a bagel on a plate of onion rolls,’” says Mayer, quoting Fanny. “When a character has real clarity about who they are, and they articulate it in a particular way,” he adds, “it’s worth quoting, and Beanie has that clarity about herself as well.”
“I think the thing I most relate to in Fanny is her passion. From the beginning of her life, she was incredibly clear about what she wanted,” explains Feldstein. Today she’s speaking with me from the finished basement of the Berkshires farmhouse, a cozy rec room walled in white shiplap. Throughout her January lockdown, this has been her “lair,” as she virtually prepared for the show via voice lessons with Broadway vocal Svengali Liz Caplan, workout videos, and clown classes. “Zoom private clown training is a unique, wonderful experience,” Feldstein notes wryly.
